ADSBS Dorper Breeding Courses
The American Dorper Sheep Breeders’ Society Dorper Breeder Courses featuring course instructors
Ashley Phillips and Raymond Read will be held at Stephens County Fair & Expo Center, Duncan, OK, April 16-19, 2019.
Ashley is from South Africa, Eastern Cape, Tarkastad and has been breeding Dorpers for 10 years.
He and his father, who has over 48 years of breeding experience, work together at Mickey Phillips & Son Dorpers and breed Dorpers and White Dorpers. They are the only breeders in South African history to breed back-to-back Grand Champion Dorper Ewe and Ram for two consecutive years.
They bred Red Bull, Bolt Junior Grand Champion Rams in 2016 and 2018, and Black Beauty and Love Grand Champion Ewes in 2016 and 2018.
Ashley studied at UNISA and holds a diploma in Agricultural Management from UNISA. He completed the Artificial Insemination Course at Ramsem PTY LTD.
Ashley is a Dorper inspector and judge, and has worked in Brazil, Sweden, Mexico and the USA.
Raymond is from Warmbaths, Limpopo, South Africa. He has been breeding Dorpers since 1973 when he received two stud ewes and a ram as a gift from a well-known breeder, Mr Hennie de Smidt, one of the founder members and pioneers of the Dorper breed. He later attended courses under Mr. Albie van Niekerk and Rodney Rayner. Albie is a highly respected breeder – many of the Dorper bloodlines we know today originate from Albie’s breeding.
After graduating university with a degree in Animal Science, he qualified as a Dorper judge in 1989 and was appointed as an inspector.
He has been invited to judge and teach since 2001 in Canada, the United States, Brazil, Australia, China and Mexico. He has presented many Junior/Senior and judges courses, including the first Dorper course ever in the Mandarin language (with an interpreter) when a delegation of Chinese/Mongolian breeders came to South Africa for training in 2016.
